Five-Run Second, Strong Start by Boynton Lift Beacons Over Memphis

The Valparaiso University baseball team entered the win column on Sunday at Memphis as redshirt junior Spencer Boynton (Tampa, Fla. / Seffner Christian) delivered five solid innings including going perfect over the first four frames. The Beacons tallied five runs in the second and that total held up for a 5-3 win in the series finale in Tennessee.

How It Happened
  • After Boynton retired the side in order in the bottom of the first, the Beacons started the scoring with a five-run top of the second.
  • The top of the second inning started modestly with two outs and nobody on base and the first five Beacons of the game had been retired, but redshirt freshman Aidan Thaxton (Chicago, Ill. / St. Ignatius College Prep) singled to plate a run on an error in the outfield, then senior Kade Reinertson (Huxley, Iowa / Ballard Community) added a run-scoring single through the right side to make it 2-0.
  • After a walk for the second free pass of the inning, redshirt freshman Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) continued his strong start to the season with the big blow of the inning, a two-run double down the right-field line. A second hit batter of the inning and an infield single followed, then sophomore Kevin Denty (Tinley Park, Ill. / Marian Catholic) walked with the bases loaded to force in the inning's fifth run and chase the Memphis starter from the game after 1 2/3 frames.
  • Boynton cruised through the first four innings, sending down the first 12 men he faced to keep Valpo's 5-0 lead intact. The right-hander was touched for a single tally in the fifth, the only run he permitted in his five-inning start while allowing just two hits, no walks and striking out five.
  • Senior reliever Harry Deliyannis (Bloomington, Ind. / Bloomington North) was charged with two runs on three hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings, limiting the damage enough to keep Valpo in front at the time of his departure.
  • Redshirt sophomore Adam Guazzo (Huntley, Ill. / Huntley) entered the game for his season debut with a runner aboard and one away in the bottom of the eighth. He nailed down the save, retiring all five batters he faced including a strikeout to seal the victory.
Inside the Game
  • Boynton garnered his first victory with a bounce-back outing, turning around a performance where he lasted just 1 1/3 innings and allowed eight earned runs last weekend at Samford. The righty missed last season due to Tommy John surgery.
  • Guazzo, who worked mostly as a starter last season, nailed down his first collegiate save.
  • Valpo owned a 9-5 edge in the hit column.
  • Valpo starting pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts and issued just one walk this weekend.
  • Redshirt junior Spencer Warfield (Fullerton, Calif. / Servite) enjoyed a multi-hit game and reached base three times with a single, double and walk.
  • Sullivan played solid shortstop in addition to going 3-for-5 with two doubles. He has three multi-hit games in the first six games of the season and had three extra-base knocks in this weekend's series in Memphis.
