Softball Falls in MVC Opener at Indiana State

The Valpo softball team lifted the lid on the Missouri Valley Conference slate Friday afternoon in Terre Haute, Ind., falling to host Indiana State 6-2 despite the first career home run from Lexi Szostak (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and strong performances at the top of the order from Madison Vrastil (Oak Forest, Ill./Andrew) and Marissa Jackson (Willis, Mich./Huron).

How It Happened
  • Indiana State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a pair of unearned runs.
  • Valpo got those runs right back in the top of the second, starting with a first-pitch leadoff homer from Szostak, who drove the inning-opening offering over the wall in left.
  • Kim Rodas (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon) followed by drawing a five-pitch walk, moved up to second three batters later on a base knock by Vrastil and tied the game on an RBI single back through the middle from Jackson.
  • The Sycamores got those runs right back in the bottom of the second on a two-out, two-run triple.
  • While Valpo got one runner on base in each of the final five frames, it was never able to move that runner into scoring position. Meanwhile, ISU capped the scoring with another two-out, two-run triple in the fifth.

Inside the Game
  • Szostak's round-tripper was the first of her career. It was the third homer by a Beacon in the last eight games after the team went homerless over the opening 13 games.
  • Vrastil extended her on-base streak to open her collegiate career to 21 games by leading off the game with a walk, and lengthened her hitting streak to 12 games with her second-inning single.
  • Vrastil finished 2-for-3 out of the leadoff spot, her 12th multi-hit game of the year — tied for the most in a single season by a Valpo player since 2017.
  • Jackson went 3-for-4 in the two spot in the order for her first career three-hit game. It was her second multi-hit game of the season.
  • Sydney McDermott (Stout, Ohio/Portsmouth West) took the loss in the circle, falling to 4-3 as she started and threw the first five innings. Erin Metz (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) tossed a shutout sixth inning out of the bullpen.
