Beacons Hit Four Home Runs in Series Finale at Missouri State

The Valparaiso University baseball team hit three home runs and led 5-4 in the middle of the third inning, but fell 25-7 in Sunday's series finale at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo. Patrick Ilitch (Detroit, Mich. / University Liggett) had a multi-homer day to lead the Beacons. The wind was blowing out on a hitter-friendly day as the game got out of hand against the first-place Bears after two competitive games to start the series.

How It Happened
  • Missouri State batted around in the opening inning, using four hits and three walks to produce a four-run frame.
  • Valpo responded in the top of the second with a pair of big flies, as Ilitch lifted a tape-measure two-run job to left that Trackman measured at 393 feet. Later in the inning, Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) cracked one that narrowly made its way into the left-field bullpen, chipping the deficit to one at 4-3.
  • After lefty Lucas Foley (Deer Park, Ill. / Lake Zurich) retired the side in order in the second, Valpo took its first lead of the game in the top of the third on a 405-foot blast by Connor Giuisti (Hoffman Estates, Ill. / Fremd) that made it 5-4 Beacons.
  • Missouri State reestablished the lead with six runs in the third, then added five in the fourth to boost the gap to 10 at 15-5.
  • Nine more Missouri State runs crossed the plate in the fifth to increase the lead to 24-5.
  • Ilitch lifted a solo shot in the top of the sixth, completing a two-homer day.
  • The Bears added a run in the bottom of the sixth, then Giusti was hit by a pitch with the bags full in the top of the seventh to force in the game's final run.
Inside the Game
  • Ilitch's home runs lifted his season total to four and his career total to five. This marked the first multi-homer game by a Beacon since Carson Husmann had two on April 28 of last season at UIC. Three of Ilitch's five career home runs have come at Hammons Field.
  • Sullivan's long ball was his third of the season.
  • Giusti homered for the second straight day, lifting his season total to seven, Valpo total to 14 and overall collegiate career total to 24.
