Deliyannis Deals, Outdueled on Saturday

The Valparaiso University baseball team received a stellar pitching performance from senior Harry Deliyannis (Bloomington, Ind. / Bloomington North) and played a clean game defensively, but Belmont starting pitcher Zane Brown stole the show, twirling a no-hitter to lead the Bruins to a 1-0 win on Saturday at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville.

How It Happened
  • Deliyannis started the game in a groove by posting zeros in each of the first two innings. He had sent down six straight and had two outs in the third before Pete Daniel ripped a solo shot to put the Bruins on the board.
  • Deliyannis continued to roll after that, sending down eight consecutively after the home run including 1-2-3 fourth and fifth innings. He posted zeroes in the sixth, seventh and eighth as well with his final frame featuring a smart play on the mound as he intentionally dropped a popped-up bunt before starting a 1-3-6 double play.
  • Brown hit Kevin Denty (Tinley, Park. / Marian Catholic) in the first inning and Spencer Warfield (Fullerton, Calif. / Servite) to lead off the third. Patrick Ilitch (Detroit, Mich. / University Liggett) and Kade Reinertson (Huxley, Iowa / Ballard Community) both worked walks in the fifth, but after that Brown sent down the next 13 to secure the no-hitter.
Inside the Game
  • Deliyannis' final line featured one run on five hits, no walks and two strikeouts as he registered his first complete game in a Valpo uniform and the third of his collegiate career.
  • Deliyannis flipped Valpo's third complete game of the year, joining two by Connor Lockwood.
  • This marked Valpo's seventh one-run loss of the season as the Beacons fell to 1-7 in games dictated by a single run. Six of those seven one-run defeats have come in Valley play as the Beacons have dropped a one-run game in each of the team's six Valley series.
  • This marked the first Valpo game decided by a 1-0 score since a loss at Georgia Southern on March 7, 2020.
  • The game required just 1 hour, 52 minutes to play, Valpo's fastest game since April 5, 2024 at Illinois State (1 hour, 45 minutes; seven innings) and fastest nine-inning game since April 26, 2013, when a strong pitching performance by Chris DeBoo lifted Valpo over Wright State 5-1.
  • Valpo has one total hit in two games in the series.
