Game Recap: Baseball |

Illinois State Takes Middle Game of Weekend Series

The Valparaiso University baseball team scored three runs in the opening inning and held a 3-0 lead through two, but a six-run third turned the tide of the game and visiting Illinois State eventually pulled away for an 18-3, seven-inning win at Emory G. Bauer Field on Saturday.

How It Happened
  • The bottom of the first started modestly for the Beacons with two outs and nobody on base, but five straight Valpo batters reached base leading to three runs. Austin Amburgey (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) singled home the first tally, and two more crossed the plate on wild pitches to make it 3-0.
  • Valpo starter Harry Deliyannis (Bloomington, Ind. / Bloomington North) sent down the side in order in the opening inning, and worked around two walks to post a zero in the second. Valpo couldn't cash in on a second-and-third, one-out chance in the last of the second, then Illinois State took the lead for good with six runs in the third including a pair of key doubles.
  • Illinois State went to the bullpen in the third, and the Valpo bats were quiet from that point forward.
  • After a two-run double in the third, Daniel Pacella added a three-run homer in the fourth, expanding the lead to 9-3.
  • The Redbirds poured on a run in the fifth and eight more in the sixth.
Inside the Game
  • Valpo had 10 hits, notching a double-figure hit total for just the second time in the last 10 games.
  • Three Beacons enjoyed multi-hit games, led by Amburgey with three knocks. Liam Patton (Barrington, Ill. / Warsaw) and Patrick Ilitch (Detroit, Mich. / University Liggett) contributed two hits apiece. Amburgey's three-hit day was his first in a Valpo uniform, while Patton moved into a tie for the team lead with his seventh multi-hit performance.
  • Freshman Michael Kuska (Pontiac, Ill. / Pontiac Township) came into the game and had his first collegiate hit.
  • Sophomore lefty Kaden Kiser (Columbus, Ohio / Hamilton Township) had the best day of any Valpo pitcher, working a scoreless ninth.
  • This marked Valpo's largest margin of defeat since May 18, 2018, a 16-0, seven-inning loss to Indiana State.
