Game Recap: Baseball |

Denty Homers in Defeat at Northwestern

Valparaiso University baseball sophomore Kevin Denty (Tinley Park, Ill. / Marian Catholic) ripped a solo shot to start the game's scoring, but the Beacons fell 12-4 to Northwestern in the nonconference and road finale on Tuesday in Evanston, Ill.

How It Happened
  • Valpo starting pitcher Nick Baffa (Glenview, Ill. / Notre Dame College Prep) retired the side in order in the first, then followed by working scoreless frames in each of the next two innings. The second ended on a caught stealing as catcher Liam Patton (Barrington, Ill. / Warsaw) cut down a would-be base stealer.
  • The Beacons started the scoring in the fourth, when Denty led off the inning by ripping a home run to make it 1-0.
  • Consecutive extra-base hits started the Northwestern fourth, including a two-run, go-ahead home run by Jackson Freeman. Later in the inning, Jack Lausch launched a solo shot to make it 3-1.
  • Northwestern added three in the sixth to increase the lead to 6-1. The frame included a two-run double by Griffin Mills. Valpo pitching walked five in the frame.
  • Valpo batted around in the top of the seventh, scoring three times to cut the deficit to two. Bryan Hatch (Des Plaines, Ill. / St. Viator) lifted a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to make it 6-2, then Mathew Pigeon (Canton, Mass. / Canton) spanked a two-run single to plate two more. The Beacons had the bases loaded with a chance for more, but Thomas Cooper (Brentwood, Tenn. / Ravenwood) hit a fly ball to the warning track in left to end the inning.
  • Northwestern got two of those runs back by scoring twice in the last of the seventh to make it 8-4. They tacked on four in the eighth to make it 12-4.
Inside the Game
  • Denty's homer was Valpo's first in the last eight games.
  • Denty's home run was his second of the season and the fifth of his Valpo career. Both of his homers this season have come against Big Ten teams as this was his first since March 14 at Illinois.
  • Pigeon made his first start in a Valpo uniform and picked up his first Beacon base hit.
  • Denty, Connor Giusti (Hoffman Estates, Ill. / Fremd) and Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) had two hits apiece. Denty leads the team with 14 multi-hit outputs, while Sullivan has 11.
