Valparaiso University football senior return specialist
Chris Gundy (Smithfield, Va. / Smithfield) was recognized by the Pioneer Football League on Sunday, as he was named the league's Special Teams Player of the Week after a record-setting 95-yard punt return touchdown to start Valpo's scoring in Saturday's 37-3 blowout of Morehead State in Morehead, Ky.
Â
Gundy, who earned his second PFL Special Teams Player of the Week award this season, also ripped off a 36-yard kickoff return and totaled 108 punt return yards on two opportunities. Â
Â
Gundy's 95-yard punt return was the longest in the history of the program, breaking a 60-year-old record set by Tom Dohrmann at Wabash on Sept. 17, 1966. The return was the longest nationally in the NCAA (FBS, FCS, Division-II and Division-III) this season. Gundy leads the NCAA outright with three punt-return touchdowns this season. His punt return average of 30.0 leads the FCS nation and ranks second in all of Division-I.
Â
Gundy's big return spurred Valpo to its second-largest margin of victory in PFL play ever in a 37-3 rout of Morehead State. The Beacons return to action by hosting Drake at Brown Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available on tickets.valpoathletics.com. Â
