Melliere Leads Team as Men’s Golf Closes First Tournament of Spring

The Valparaiso University men's golf team finished out the opening tournament of the spring season on Tuesday, playing the final 18 holes of the 54-hole Lake Jovita Invitational, co-hosted by Ball State and Richmond at the par-72, 7121-yard Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla. Junior Adam Melliere (Zionsville, Ind. / Zionsville) had the best round of any Beacon and posted the team's top score for the event.
 
How It Happened
  • Melliere stroked a team-best 73 (+1) on Tuesday, finishing the 54 holes at 221. He placed tied for 46th of 88, climbing nine positions in Tuesday's final round. Melliere was under par through his first 15 holes of the day, but finished at one over.
  • Junior Elliott Lee (Tillamook, Ore. / Tillamook) and senior Owen Sander (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel), who was golfing as an individual, tied for the second-best score by a Beacon on Tuesday, as they each needed 75 strokes.
  • Thanks in large part to a strong opening round, redshirt junior Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario / Aurora) was second on the team for the tourney at 223.
  • Valpo's strength was par-3 scoring, tied for fourth in the field at 3.15.
  • Valpo finished 14th in the field, posting a team score of 895 including a 12-over 300 on Tuesday. Xavier was the team champion at 846, while Wright State's Shane Ochs took medalist honors with his 13-under 203.
