How It Happened
- Freshman Cal Schembra (Greenwood, Ind. / Center Grove) continued his strong start to the season, ripping a double as part of a stretch where four straight Beacons reached base in the top of the first. His two-bagger drove in the first two runs of the game, and later in the inning he crossed the dish on a ground ball by Gavin Bennett (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) that extended the lead to 3-0.
- The Beacons tacked on one more run in the opening inning when Cole Lockwood (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) had an infield single that made it 4-0.
- Starting pitcher Connor Lockwood (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) faced one over the minimum through the first four innings, keeping the 5-0 lead intact. Gauthier clobbered his home run to right in the fifth to make it 7-0.
- Three unearned runs crossed the plate for the Spartans in the bottom of the fifth to reduce the lead to four at 7-3, but Gauthier added a run-scoring single with two outs in the sixth to boost it back to five.
- Connor Lockwood sent down the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings, sandwiched around two runs for the Beacons in the top of the seventh on a two-out single by George Betevis (Hanover Park, Ill. / Bartlett).
- With Valpo leading 10-3, Dylan Swinehart (Elkhart, Ind. / Concord) took over for Connor Lockwood and pitched a scoreless eighth. The first three men reached base against him in the bottom of the ninth, then Ryan Kruse (Detroit, Mich. / U of D Jesuit) came in and struck out three of the four men he faced. Although a two-out single plated a pair, Kruse rounded out the 10-5 win.
