Freshman
Cal Schembra (Greenwood, Ind. / Center Grove) launched a solo shot, but the Valparaiso University baseball team dropped Friday's series opener 6-1 at Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala.
Â
How It Happened
- Working as an opener, Adam Guazzo (Huntley, Ill. / Huntley) did his job on the bump, crafting two shutout innings to begin the game.
- Alabama State started the scoring with a four-run third on four hits.
- The Hornets tacked on single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings including a solo shot in the fifth. In between those frames, Valpo got on the board in the top of the fifth when Schembra led off with a solo homer.
- Neither team scored over the game's final four innings. Freshman Joey Kafka (Mundelein, Ill. / Mundelein) did good work out of the bullpen, logging two scoreless for the Beacons.
Inside the Game
- Valpo was limited to just two hits and did not have any after Schembra's homer to lead off the fifth.
- The Schembra dinger was the second of the season for the freshman and the team's fourth long ball.
