Baseball Falls to UIC on Saturday in Chicago

The Valparaiso University baseball team fell 10-0 in seven innings to host UIC on Saturday at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago. Thomas Cooper (Brentwood, Tenn. / Ravenwood) notched two of the team's four hits to lead the Beacons.

How It Happened
  • Valpo starting pitcher Connor Lockwood (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) worked around a leadoff double in the opening inning, posting a zero as the Flames stranded a pair. Lockwood fired a 1-2-3 second with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Valpo stranded a runner in scoring position in each of the first two innings, and it was 0-0 going to the bottom of the third. An error extended what would have been another 1-2-3 inning, and the Flames made the Beacons pay, scoring five unearned runs with a two-out rally, highlighted by a standup, two-run triple to left by Thomas Curry.
  • UIC strung together five straight singles in the fourth, producing three runs to boost the lead to 8-0. The Flames tacked on another in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly to lift the lead to 9-0.
  • UIC clinched the run-rule victory with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh.
Inside the Game
  • Cooper enjoyed a multi-hit game, lashing out two of the team's four hits including a double. George Betevis (Hanover Park, Ill. / Bartlett) had a two-bagger for Valpo's other extra-base knock.
  • UIC's Brandon Bak threw a seven-inning shutout against the Beacons for the second straight year.
  • Senior Eli Riley (Zanesville, Ind. / Norwell) also had a hit, extending his on-base streak to 19.
  • The game required a mere 1 hour, 55 minutes to complete, Valpo's fastest game of the season so far, outdoing a game on Feb. 14 at Gardner Webb that lasted just 1:58.
  • This was the 150th all-time meeting between Valpo and UIC.
