Valparaiso University men's track & field sophomore Jatzyel Hernandez (Carolina, P.R. / American Military Academy [St. Ambrose]) gained experience on an international stage this summer, as he participated in the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Ore.
 
Hernandez, a sprinter who has joined the Beacon roster as a transfer from St. Ambrose, ran as part of the 4x400 in the event.
 
"I just wanted to put my country in a good spot," Hernandez said. "I gave everything I had. I was locked in and just wanted to literally give everything and try my best. I knew it was going to be a big opportunity so I didn't want to waste it. It was a long trip going from Puerto Rico, but once we got there, the whole experience was amazing. Everything was set up perfectly."
 
Hernandez qualified for the U20 Worlds after competing in the Puerto Rican National Championships. He received a call offering him the opportunity to go to Eugene based on his showing in the 400m at the Puerto Rican National Championships.
 
"It was the best experience that I've had so far," Hernandez said. "It was crazy being there competing with the best U20 athletes from the whole world. It was amazing."
 
Hernandez continues a tradition of Puerto Rican runners choosing to compete at Valpo, including his current teammates senior Alejandro Chaves (Bayamon, P.R. / American Military Academy) and Ferdinand Rosa (Toa Alta, P.R. / American Military Academy). Alum Ignacio Veloz Bonilla (San Juan, P.R. / American Military Academy) started the trend of Valpo runners who hail from Puerto Rico.
 
"Valpo has been amazing; I feel like I'm with family here," Hernandez said. "Everyone is so nice. A lot of us are new to the team, so it feels like everyone is in the same boat. We want to work together as a team. It's a blessing to be able to represent Puerto Rico here at the college level. I'm just grateful to God and excited to be able to put the work in to get Valpo to a better place."
