Three Crusader Baseball Players Named to All-Academic Team

Valparaiso University’s baseball program had three players voted to the Horizon League’s All-Academic Team for their efforts both on the diamond and in the classroom. Andrew Bain (Indianapolis, Ind./Park Tudor H.S.), Tyler Deetjen (Saint Charles, Ill./East H.S.), and Will Hagel (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect H.S.) were all selected for the 12-member team.

The 2012 Horizon League regular season and tournament champions are not resting on their laurels this summer as several Crusader baseball players are sharpening their skills for the upcoming 2013 season by playing in collegiate summer leagues throughout the country. The Crusaders are be represented on 14 different teams in nine leagues from the east coast to the west coast.

Valparaiso University’s Spencer Mahoney (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township H.S.) has been named to the 2012 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team as selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.


Bain Named to Gary’s All-Regional Team

Valparaiso University designated hitter Andrew Bain (Indianapolis, Ind./Park Tudor H.S.) was named to the All-Regional Team following the conclusion of the NCAA’s Gary Regional held Friday through Sunday at U.S. Steel Yard.

Crusaders Conclude Final Tune-up for NCAA Tournament

Valparaiso University arrived at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind. for its first look at the stadium for the season and take part in a final practice before opening NCAA Tournament play on Friday evening against #15/15 Purdue. Unfortunately for the Crusaders, the practice was cut short about 20 minutes in as the light rain that had fallen throughout became heavier and the tarp was put on the field.

Valparaiso makes its first appearance in the NCAA Division I regionals since 1968 this weekend as the Crusaders head 27 miles down the road to U.S. Steel Yard in Gary for the double elimination tournament.
