Valpo Comes Up Short Against Long, Milwaukee

Box Score

It was anything but a good Friday for the Valpo offense with runners in scoring position.

The Crusaders stranded twelve runners as Milwaukee pitcher Jake Long (3-2) threw his second straight shutout to beat Valpo 2-0 at Les Miller Field in Chicago.

Long worked in and out of trouble all afternoon, recording just two perfect frames in the two hour and two minute tilt.  He gave up eight hits, two walks and struck out five.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the 4th inning when Michael Porcaro scored on a Ryan Solberg RBI groundout.

Milwaukee added an insurance run in the home half of the 5th inning via a Luke Meeteer infield single that plated shortstop Alex Erdmann.

Cole Webb (2-4) was saddled with another tough-luck loss.  He fired 7 1/3 innings, surrendering one earned run, eight hits, and two walks. Webb struck out three while lowering his ERA to 1.82 in the losing effort.

Tanner Vavra and Chris Manning both had two-hit games for the Crusaders.  Bryce Hara's nine-game hitting streak came to an end in the defeat.

Valparaiso (9-14, 1-3) will seek revenge Saturday afternoon as they face Milwaukee (9-11, 5-2) in a doubleheader in Chicago.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm at Les Miller Field.
