The platform shifted from the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship to the ITA Midwest Regional, but the success of Valparaiso University women’s tennis sophomore Jelena Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) remained constant on Thursday. She followed her MVC Individual Title with a pair of qualifying draw wins on the first day of competition in Ann Arbor, Mich.
How It Happened
- Vujanic started the day with a straight set win over conference foe Natalie Bravo of Illinois State. Vujanic won her Round of 64 match 6-4, 6-3.
- The Valpo sophomore prevailed by that same score (6-4, 6-3) in her Round of 32 match, this time getting the best of Marquette’s Elisabeth Desmarais.
- Sophomore Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) engaged in a tight Round of 64 match with Akron’s Ceci Rosas. After winning the first set 6-4, Czerwonka dropped the second set 7-5. Rosas won decisive set 6-0.

Vujanic will continue the qualifying draw by facing off with Bowling Green’s Marharita Tavpash on Friday. Singles matches will begin at 8 a.m. CT. In addition, Czerwonka and Vujanic will partake in the doubles main draw, which starts at 1 p.m. CT on Thursday. The Valpo duo’s first match will be against Thielman/Galloway of Oakland.
