The Valparaiso University women’s tennis team opened the spring slate on Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 setback at Toledo. Valpo played short-handed in the match with two players sidelined by injuries, including a No. 1 singles injury that caused every player to climb a position in the lineup. Toledo provided a quality opponent as the Rockets went 16-7 overall and 8-1 at home last season.

• Senior Randi Wind (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) accounted for Valpo’s closest match of the day, falling in a competitive 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 showdown with Eileen Carney at third singles.
• Fellow senior Meg Modesto (Chesterton, Ind. / Chesterton) came up shy in her match at No. 2 singles, succumbing to Kokoro Chishaki 6-3, 6-4.
• Freshman Isabella Schoolcraft (Bargersville, Ind. / Center Grove) made her dual match debut, dropping her No. 4 singles showdown 6-3, 6-3. Schoolcraft teamed with Modesto at No. 2 doubles and fell 6-3.
• Jordan Kopfer (Eagan, Minn. / Eastview) was on the wrong end of a 6-3, 6-2 score at No. 5, while Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) dropped her No. 1 match 6-1, 6-1.
• Wind and Czerwonka joined forces at No. 1 doubles and came out on the wrong end of a 6-2 score.
• With only five healthy players available, Valpo defaulted at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Valpo (1-1) will return to action on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Butler in a match that will take place at The Northwest Athletic Club in Michigan City. The originally scheduled match against IUPUI on Friday has been postponed and will be made up at a later date.
