Valpo Trio in Top Half of Field Through Day 1 at WMU Bronco Classic

The Valparaiso University women's golf team played the first two rounds of the WMU Bronco Classic, hosted by Western Michigan at Moors Golf Club in Portage, Mich., on a pleasant and sunny October Monday. The Beacons had three players finish the first day of the 54-hole event in the top half of a 62-player field.
 
How It Happened
  • Junior Taylor Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind. / Michigan City), senior Katie Schreiner (Fenton, Mo. / Summit) and senior Madison Keil (LaGrange, Ind. / Lakeland) all finished the day within one stroke of each other. Skibinski and Schreiner shared the team lead at 161 (+17; 26th), followed by Keil at 162 (+18; 28th).
  • Skibinski boasted the team's best Round-1 score with a 78, while Keil led the way in Round 2 with a 79.
  • As a team, the Beacons finished the day in sixth of nine at 649 (+73). The team shaved 11 strokes off its score from the first round to the second round, improving from 330 (+42) to 319 (+31). The Beacons are significantly ahead of Northern Kentucky (675), Cleveland State (681) and Eastern Illinois (697).
  • CSU Northridge (611) leads Ohio by three strokes for the team lead, while Grace Pair of CSU Northridge holds the lead for medalist honors at 145.
Inside the Rounds
  • Valpo ranks third in the field in par-5 scoring at 5.44.
  • The Beacons had three birdies for the day, two by Schreiner and one by Keil.

The Beacons will close out the tournament on Tuesday at Moors Golf Club in Portage, Mich.
