The Valparaiso University women's golf team played the first 36 holes of the spring season on Monday, beginning the two-day Islander Classic at the par-72, 6250-yard Corpus Christi Country Club in Corpus Christi, Texas. Senior Katelyn McCoy (Chesterton, Ind. / Chesterton) has the team's best score in the tournament with 18 holes remaining.
 
How It Happened

• McCoy posted an 83 in Round 1 before following with a 79 in Round 2, finishing the opening day in 38^th of 57 with a 162. McCoy birdied back-to-back holes early in her second round and finished with five total birdies for the round compared to one in the first round.
• Fellow senior Taylor Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind. / Michigan City) was a single stroke behind McCoy on Monday, finishing her 36 holes at 163 (80-83).
• Freshman Katie Estridge (Biloxi, Miss. / Biloxi) had six straight pars on Holes 13 to 18 in Round 1, helping her finish with the team's best Round-1 score at 79. She finished the day at 166.
• The Beacons totaled 11 birdies on the day.
• Valpo had identical team scores in each of the first two rounds at 332, finishing the day at 664, 10^th on the team leaderboard.
• UTRGV leads the tournament at 589, while Linnea Olsson (East Texas A&M) and Aaliyah Hryniewiecka-Irwin (McLennan CC) are tied for medalist honors at 1-under.

"We had a few ups and downs today, but not a bad start to the season. Katie had a good first round start today, and Taylor's start was strong. Katelyn's finish was definitely a confidence boost. We had quite a few birdies today. Hopefully that gives us some momentum going into tomorrow."
