Sophia Sutton to Join Valpo Women’s Golf Program

The Valparaiso University women's golf program and head coach Jill McCoy have announced the addition of Sophia Sutton, an incoming freshman who will join the team for the 2026-2027 season.

"I am very excited to add Sophia to my roster this fall," McCoy said. "I could tell from the first conversation with Sophia that she is a hard worker and has a lot of energy. Sophia is going to make a great addition to the team."

Sutton earned first team all-district honors in Region 1 6A in 2026 after garnering second team all-district recognition in 2025. She shot 74-80 to finish as the district runner-up in 2026 and was a regional qualifier. In 2025, she was a regional qualifier runner-up.

Sutton had top-10 finishes in seven of her eight tournaments in 2025-2026 and shot a career-low 74. A TJGT and NTPGA Jr. tour member, Sutton is a Crown Golf Student of Joey Wurtemberger and is in approximately the top 10 percent of UIL 6A golfers in Texas.

"I'm so excited for the opportunity to attend Valpo to continue my athletic and academic journey with their women's golf program," Sutton said. "As soon as I visited, Valpo stood out to me because of its amazing engineering reputation, incredible facilities and small class sizes that will help me thrive as a future mechanical engineering major. I'm also so grateful to have the chance to compete at the next level surrounded by talented players, coaches and teammates, as well as with their outstanding resources. I can't wait to grow through the game, grow off the course and be a part of the Valpo community."

Beyond golf, Sutton has earned College Board National Schools Recognition and is an AP Scholar. She has garnered academic all-district honors, is Fusion 360 CAD certified, is part of Asian Student Association and is a black belt in Shito Ryu. In addition, Sutton is a member of varsity choir and works at a local golf course.

Sutton joins previously-announced incoming freshman Olivia Bailey as newcomers set to join the program in 2025-2026.
