Schmack Homers, Doubles in Loss at No. 17 Alabama

Box Score

The Valparaiso University baseball team jumped ahead with two runs in the first, but No. 17 Alabama responded with seven in their half of the inning on its way to a 13-3, seven-inning victory over the Beacons on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

How It Happened

  • Valpo started the game with back-to-back doubles by Kaleb Hannahs (West Terre Haute, Ind. / West Vigo) and Kyle Schmack (Wanatah, Ind. / South Central), the second of which scored the game’s first run.
  • Schmack had moved up 90 feet on an error in the outfield, so he was able to tag and score from third on a sacrifice fly to right by Ryan Maka (Oak Forest, Ill. / Oak Forest) to make it 2-0 Valpo.
  • The Crimson Tide scored seven times in the bottom of the first to take a 7-2 lead. Four of the seven runs were unearned.
  • Schmack slugged a home run to center in the third to make it 7-3, but Alabama scored five times in the fifth and eventually invoked the 10-run rule after seven.

Inside the Game

  • Schmack increased his season RBI total to seven and drilled his second home run of the young year. He clubbed his 20th career home run.
  • Schmack accounted for two of the team’s three hits.
  • Reliever Joe Seiber (Homer Glen, Ill. / Lockport [College of DuPage]) worked the sixth for Valpo and did not allow a run, serving as a bright spot for the pitching staff.
  • Valpo was plagued by four errors and allowed six unearned runs.
