Track & Field Resumes Action at Notre Dame

The Valparaiso University track & field team resumed action on Saturday as the Beacons competed in the Notre Dame Invite, the squad's first competition since opening the indoor season in early December. Micah Mullings (Minesing, Ontario, Canada / Barrie North) won the long jump, while Joseph Scheele (Mahomet, Ill. / Mahomet-Seymour) posted the second-best time in program history in the mile.

How It Happened
  • Mullings took the long-jump crown with a season-best of 7.12 meters, outdoing eight competitors in the field.
  • Scheele crossed the finish line in 4:10.92, finishing in the middle of the pack in a competitive race with a 14th-place finish out of 31 runners. Scheele's time ranks second in program history in the men's indoor mile, behind only Alexander Bruno's 2018 record of 4:05.75.
  • Also the owner of a top-5 time in program history, Katie Koryczan (Crown Point, Ind. / Crown Point) ran a PR of 9.64 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Her time, good for a third-place finish in the race, ranks fifth in the program record book after she already cracked the program's all-time top five with her previous best.
  • In the distance races, Karson Hollander (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Crystal Lake) and Vivian Rahmel (Springfield, Ill. / Sacred Heart-Griffin) led the Valpo pack in the men's and women's 3000, respectively. Hollander's time of 8:34.42 was a personal best and ranked seventh of 22, while Rahmel finished in 10:36.86 with a PR of her own.
  • In the sprints, Anthony Vassolo (Tinley Park, Ill. / Andrew) stopped the clock at 22.58 in the men's 200, placing fourth. On the women's side in that event, Taylor Pusateri (Portage, Ind. / Genoa-Kingston) finished in the top half of the field with a time of 26.16.
  • In the throws, Reid Davis (Nashville, Ind. / Brown County) had a season-best 14.57m in the weight to place ninth, while Gabe Quinn (LaPorte, Ind. / LaPorte) was 10th in the shot with a PR of 13.24m.
  • In the pole vault, Thaddeus Malatlian (Pfafftown, N.C. / Reagan) was second at 3.99m.
