Senior Jen Patz (Naples, Fla./Naples) posted the best five-game set of her collegiate career Saturday, leading the way as #21 Valpo continued action at the Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic in Struthers, Ohio on Saturday.
 
How It Happened

• Valpo opened the day's action, contested in the traditional team format, against Coppin State and came away with a 1008-956 victory. Payton Rowley (Stewartville Minn./Stewartville) and Maia Struble (Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond) tied for team-high honors, posting identical 214 games, while Angela Webber (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) — making her traditional match debut — was right behind them with a 213.
• The Beacons' quintet of bowlers averaged better than 200 for a second straight match in the day's second match slot, but it wouldn't be enough for the win, as #6 Arkansas State prevailed by a 1073-1014 final. Alexis Wooley (Fort White, Fla./Fort White) led Valpo in that match with a 226, while Struble broke 200 for the second straight match with a 206.
• Valpo fell 1033-879 to #1 Jacksonville State in the third match slot, and then dropped a 1019-952 decision to host #4 Youngstown State despite Patz rolling a career-best 257 game and Rowley posting a 212.
• The Beacons got back in the win column to end the day, defeating Western Illinois, 905-881. Patz paced Valpo for the second straight match to close the day, rolling a 203.
• Patz finished the day with a total of 1037 for the five matches to set a career high, while Rowley just missed posting a 200 average as well, finishing at 999.
• As a team, the Beacons ended day two in ninth place of the 18 competing teams, with a total of 9,580 pins.
