The Valparaiso University men's golf team continued action in Puerto Rico with the second day of the three-day, 54-hole Dorado Beach Collegiate, hosted by UNCG at the par-72, 7119-yard TPC Dorado Beach Sugarcane course on Monday. Senior
Sam Booth (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) posted the team's top Round-2 score.
How It Happened
- Booth carded a 70 (-2) in the second round, representing the lone Beacon to go under par on Monday. He is at 146 (+2) for the tournament through 36 holes, ranking tied for 45th in a 102-player field. The senior had four birdies in the second round and trimmed six strokes off his Round-1 score.
- Sophomore Adam Melliere (Zionsville, Ind. / Zionsville) posted the team's second-best Round-2 score at 74 (+2), replicating his effort from the opening round to put him at 148 (t-62) entering Tuesday's final round.
- Senior Anthony Delisanti (Sanborn, N.Y. / Niagara Wheatfield) turned in a 75 (+3) and he is now tied for 30th in the field at 144 with 18 holes to play.
- As a team, Valpo posted a 296 (+8), finishing the day in 14th of 16 at 587. Host UNGC leads at 552 and has the top individual with Jack Marcotte at 135 (-9).
Thoughts from Head Coach Dave Gring
"Our team had a terrific start to the day, playing the first 27 holes on a tough stretch of the course at two under. We had three birdies and only one bogey making the turn to the front nine. The momentum shifted and we played the next six holes at seven over. We struggled off the tee, couldn't get our wedges close to the hole and we didn't capitalize on some of the easier holes on the course. In the final six holes, we only made four birdies and we had a couple double bogeys, and we didn't finish strong at all."
"We need to bounce back tomorrow. This is our first taste of adversity in a long spring season, so the guys are going to need to step up, execute and play with determination. We need a quality team response and the guys can finish the tournament with some momentum heading into our next tournament."
