Tennis Adds More Wins on Final Day of Redbird Invitational

The Valparaiso University tennis team picked up three singles wins and two doubles wins on Sunday's final day of the Redbird Invitational, hosted by Illinois State in Normal, Ill. A pair of Beacons finished as runners-up in singles play. This tournament served as a de facto Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship after that event was discontinued prior to this year, with the majority of the tennis-playing members of the conference represented in Central Illinois this weekend.

How It Happened
  • Senior Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Westside) and sophomore Andrea Delgado (Richmond, Texas / Foster [Dallas Baptist]) finished as runners-up in their respective singles flights, as both players dropped their title matches on Sunday. Silva took the second set from Murray State's Valeria Chaikovskaia but dropped a competitive third set to fall 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the Flight 1 title match.
  • Delgado finished as the runner-up in Flight 5, falling to Bradley's Tseng in straight sets in Sunday's title match.
  • Sophomore Lacey Tanner (Fort Pierce, Fla. / Florida Virtual School) was victorious on Sunday, winning the seventh-place match in Flight 2 in straight sets. She defeated UNI's Raznatovic 6-4, 6-4.
  • Another Valpo victory on Sunday came from Madi Rogers (Clearwater, Fla. / Florida Virtual [Bradley]), who dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 sweep of UNI's Begic in the Flight 6 seventh-place match.
  • A pair of Beacons matched up in a third-place showdown in Flight 7, with Jolene Fernandes (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) eking out an 8-7(5) win over Ana Baron (Crown Point, Ind. / Crown Point).
  • Valpo's top doubles tandem of Silva and Rogers won the seventh-place match in Flight 1, topping UNI's Li/Raznatovic 8-5. In Flight 3, Popa and Delgado prevailed over Murray State's Melato/Dethridge in the consolation final by an 8-5 score.
Inside the Matches
  • Silva's doubles win was the 45th of her career, 10th in the program record book. She needs one more doubles win to move into a tie for ninth.
  • Popa and Delgado beat a doubles team that featured Melato, who was part of the all-conference No. 1 doubles tandem last season.
Up Next
The Beacons will host Holy Cross (Ind.) on Friday, Oct. 3 at the Valpo Tennis Complex. The match was originally scheduled for Sept. 13 and was postponed due to rain.
