The Valparaiso University women's golf team had a solid Sunday to open the two-day, 36-hole Indiana State Spring Invitational hosted by the Sycamores at the par-72, 5950-yard Country Club of Terre Haute. Senior
Katie Schreiner (Fenton, Mo. / Summit) sits in the top 10 on the player leaderboard through 18 holes. Saturday's practice round was called off and Sunday's play was delayed until the afternoon hours due to a wet course and cold temperatures.
How It Happened
- Schreiner carded a 76 (+4) in the opening round, which puts her tied for sixth of 54. She birdied the par-4 17th hole to highlight her round.
- The Beacons received a second sub-80 score from senior Anna Fay (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills), who turned in a 79 (+7) to finish the day tied for 21st.
- Senior Madison Keil (LaGrange, Ind. / Lakeland) and junior Taylor Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind. / Michigan City) had the team's other two counting scores, each using 81 strokes to get through the opening round.
- As a team, Valpo is fifth of eight at 317 (+29), ahead of Rose-Hulman, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and Eastern Illinois on the team leaderboard. The Beacons are five strokes in back of UIC for a spot in the top half of the field.
- Indiana State holds the team lead at 295, while Briana Lemaire and Sophia Florek of the Sycamores are tied with Evansville Louise Standtke for the top spot at 71 (-1).
