Valparaiso University's Esports program wrapped up their regular season in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) with two teams qualifying for postseason play.
Rocket League
The Rocket League team, led by Coach
Thomas Hohnholt, finished with a perfect 6-0 record in regular season play and will be the #1 seed heading into the playoffs. Senior captain
Soren Burkholder, senior
Joshua Cronin, and freshman
Logan Walliker will look to cap off their impressive regular season vs Augusta University in a #1 vs #8 seed playoff matchup.
Overwatch
The Varsity and Academy Overwatch teams both had successful regular seasons, going 5-1 and 3-4, respectively, with only the Varsity team qualifying for post season competition. Under the leadership of Coach
Bryce Jones and senior captain
Ben Zaweski, the varsity Overwatch team will kick off their playoff run vs Saginaw Valley State University.
League of Legends
The League of Legends team fell just short of qualifying for the postseason, finishing the regular season 3-3. "We are proud of the way this team fought throughout the season against some of the best teams in the country," said Graduate Assistant of Esports,
George Gillman. "To our graduating players,
Justin Blanco and
Eamonn O'Connell, we are very thankful for the time and commitment you put into the program and we look forward to building off of the success we have had during your time at Valpo."
Super Smash Bros.
The Super Smash Bros. team finished their regular season in NECC with a 1-6 record and will not qualify for the playoffs. "We look forward to seeing this team grow and improve in the off-season. While the record was not what we thought it would be, the experience that our newcomers got this fall will be very impactful as we look ahead to the spring season," said Graduate Assistant of Esports and Head Super Smash Bros. Coach,
George Gillman.
